Racism can be observed in all parts of the world. It is present at the workplace, in education, in health care and in the courts. It can be found in the media and the Internet. It is imbued with how the majority views and treats ethnic minorities, refugees and asylum-seekers. It is often present in stereotyping minority groups that hold majorities as well. Since racism is understood to be inherently evil, charges of racism can be used as an unchallengeable moralistic sledgehammer. Nonetheless, it is one that is fairly easy to avoid.
This book examines the ways in which the local and global are key to understanding race and racism in the intersectional context of contemporary social world. The book starts with an introduction to race and ethnicity in society. Then it sheds light on Social change is the alteration of mechanisms within the social structure, characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems. Change is a very broad concept. Though change is all around us, we do not refer to all of it as social change. Thus, physical growth from year to year, or change of seasons do not fall under the concept of social change. In sociology, we look at social change as alterations that occur in the social structure and social relationship. Social change is a process of alteration with no reference to the quality of change. And changes in society are related to changes in culture. For instance, growth of modern technology as part of the culture has been closely associated with alterations in the economic structures on important part of the society. Social change can vary in its scope and in speed. Further, it sheds light on gender and sexuality.
The concept of gender needs to be understood clearly as a cross-cutting sociocultural variable. It is an overarching variable in the sense that gender can also be applied to all other cross-cutting variables such as race, class, age, ethnic group, etc. Gender systems are established in different socio-cul-tural contexts which determine what is expected, allowed and valued in a woman/man and girl/boy in these specific contexts. Additionally, it focuses on race and culture in psychotherapy in fourth chapter, we begin by considering the social construction of race, culture and ethnicity and the other multicultural terms. Throughout this, we attempt to intersect these terms with psychotherapy. Moreover, it focuses on sociology and knowledge as socially situated activities, knowledge and knowing are made possible by and shaped by the social organization of a community or society. Social institutions, like education, family, religion, media, and scientific and medical establishments, play fundamental roles in knowledge production. Institutionally produced knowledge tends to be valued more highly in society than popular knowledge, which means that hierarchies of knowledge exist wherein the knowledge and ways of knowing of some are considered more accurate and valid than others. These distinctions often have to do with discourse, or the ways of speaking and writing that are used to express one's knowledge. For this reason, knowledge and power are considered intimately related, as there is power within the knowledge creation process, power in the hierarchy of knowledge, and especially, power in creating knowledge about others and their communities. Finally, the book closes with a focus on perspectives of anthropology and sociology.
